Liverpool defender Daniel Agger’s future with the Denmark national team could be under threat after national team boss Morten Olsen claimed that the player needs to be playing regularly in order to be part of the national team. Agger has struggled for first team opportunities at Liverpool this season. Despite the club coming close to winning the title, Agger has not been a regular first team player – especially in the second half of the season. Summer signing Cissokho has been preferred along with Martin Skrtel at the back. This has led to rumours suggesting that Agger be finally decide to call time on his Liverpool career.
The 27-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona last summer when he was one of the top players in the Premier league. However, he chose to remain at Liverpool due to the low for his club. After coming to Anfield eight years ago in a £ 6 million deal, Agger has been a regular first-team player under several managers like Rafa Benitez, Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers. It is only in the second half of last season that he lost his place. Even though he will now be part of the Denmark squad for the World Cup 2014, Olsen says that his future remains unclear.
“You may ask Daniel about [it]. He can best gauge how it looks now and, more important, next season. But of course he should be playing. Otherwise, I believe we will have a frustrated and irritated captain. I hope he will make the right choice,” said the Denmark national team boss. Agger may once again become a target for Barcelona after the Catalan club lost the services of Carlos Puyol, who is widely expected to retire in the summer. Barcelona made a £ 20 million offer for the player last summer.
