World football powerhouse Brazil avoided another embarrassment when they defeated Denmark 4-0 at the men’s football tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The host moved to the quarter final as they chase their first gold medal in football in the Olympics. They were set to get another embarrassment had they played a draw or lost, having played two draws already against South Africa and Iraq.

Brazil were shamed when they hosted the World Cup in 2014 as they lost to Germany 7-1. They were knocked out in the group stage of the Copa America this year by Peru, and could have lost a golden chance to add a medal to their tally at the Olympics, especially since the one in football had eluded them for long despite being a football stronghold. Brazil are even five time world champions at a bigger stage, and have a good reputation in the age grade tournaments.

Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa grabbed a brace and Gabriel Jesus and Luan added one goal each to make the 4-0 routing of Denmark complete. The game played at Arena Fonte Nova saw the fans chant “the champions are back.” Brazil hadn’t scored any goal before the game as two of their earlier encounters ended in a goalless draw. Denmark had four points after getting a win and a draw. Their loss to Brazil left them with same four points but enough to qualify for the quarter finals. Brazil had two points but with the victory, they end up with five points and as group leaders.

Brazil will play Columbia on Saturday in Sao Paulo, while Nigeria will play Denmark at the quarter finals. Nigeria have six points having won their first two games and qualified for the knockout but were shocked by Columbia 2-0. The tournament has had a few surprises with two-time champions Argentina and defending champions Mexico knocked out at the group stage.
